But they don’t always do it. Gloves may end up being stripped off mid-task or not worn altogether, despite the risks. This can leave workers vulnerable, and safety managers wondering why compliance is such an issue. From construction and mining to utilities, manufacturing and MRO operations, organisations looking to level up compliance need to understand and address the factors behind a worker’s decision not to glove up. ### **Identifying the issues behind non-compliance.** Damione Wright, Managing Director APAC at safety gear supplier Mechanix Wear, says there are many reasons why a worker might remove their gloves, despite clear policies, training and enforcement. Gloves might be uncomfortable, reduce dexterity or make tasks less efficient and movement harder to control. A diligent worker will want to get the job done properly, and might find the gloves they are using just get in the way. Workers might remove gloves while doing a particular part of a task – such as installing a component that requires precision. They might also fail to wear them entirely if glove dispensers are located too far away for easy access. The behaviour of senior workers can also factor in. If workers observe more experienced personnel removing their gloves, even for a brief moment, it can set a new ‘norm’ within the workplace culture. Workers may decide that the rules are negotiable, rather than something to be adhered to for safety reasons. Damione says non-compliance is rarely a knowledge or discipline issue, but a behavioural outcome shaped by the work environment. Rather than simply enforcing the rules, take note of when the gloves come off, what tasks workers are doing, what type of gloves they are wearing, and any time pressures or other factors that might be relevant. - Making hand protection fit for purpose. Rather than having one type of glove across site, match gloves to the requirements of specific tasks, for example the need for grip in wet or oily conditions or the need for dexterity for precision work. - Running glove trials. Talk to workers about what they need in a glove, and trial different types of gloves based on their feedback to find the right blend of comfort and performance. - Making hand protection available in the right sizes, and easy to access at the point of use. - Reinforcing the message that wearing PPE is part of being skilled and professional at work. According to Damione, this approach can support a shift from enforcement-driven behaviour to performance-aligned safety. > *“When PPE supports performance, compliance follows.
