Across the utilities sector, welding is used for everything from fabrication of components to routine maintenance of assets and urgent emergency repairs. Yet carrying out welding work in the utilities sector is not always easy. Crews are often deployed to remote sites, substations, pipeline easements and confined spaces where mains power is unavailable.
They rely on generators to power welding equipment, but this can add logistical complexity and safety risks to the job. Bulky generators and flammable fuel need to be transported safely. Once on site, generators create fumes and noise, and can be difficult to set up, especially when working at height. Long leads create trip hazards and restrict mobility, and productivity can suffer.
In high-pressure outage or repair scenarios, these constraints are amplified, potentially delaying the restoration of critical services or just making the job harder. ESAB offers a solution - a portable, cordless battery-powered welder that helps overcome some of these limitations to keep crews working safely and efficiently.
Designed to operate independently of fixed power sources, without compromising on performance, the ESAB Rampage VOLT ES200i supports both Stick (MMAW) and SAFE-TIG (GTAW) welding. Based on the DEWALT® FLEXVOLT™ 18/54V battery platform, it delivers up to 140 amps of output in battery mode.
It’s capable of burning up to 22 E6013 (2.5mm x 350mm) electrodes on a single charge using four 12Ah FLEXVOLT batteries, providing meaningful arc time for remote or outage-driven work before recharging is required. The unit is supplied with a fast charger, to help crews stay on the job as long as they need to.
Integrated welding controls such as hot start, arc force and cellulosic modes support consistent weld quality across various materials. The built-in Voltage Reduction Device (VRD) enhances safety in Stick mode, while the SAFE-TIG Circuit prevents accidental arc-outs on metal.
The Rampage VOLT maximises versatility. It can operate on mains power or in AMP+ Hybrid Mode, which combines battery and AC input to provide additional output while helping prevent circuit breaker trips on low-amp supplies. The output increases to 200 amps when connected to mains or operating in hybrid mode.
Built with durability in mind, the unit features a rugged, impact-resistant housing and IP23 protection, making it suitable for harsh outdoor environments. A sun-readable colour display provides clear visibility of settings, battery status and remaining arc time. The unit features integrated lifting points and a shoulder strap, and is compact and lightweight for optimum portability. It weighs in at 19kg without the battery packs, which can be detached for greater ease of movement around site.
Paul Morgan, National Accounts South Pacific at CIGWELD, says in a sector where uptime and reliability are vital, the Rampage stands out.
“Straight away this welder is a problem solver, giving workers the ability to go into remote locations and weld without the need to take generators and fuel. This welder allows them to perform the task safely, without the need for power,” he says. “Companies that utilise this product have a big opportunity to improve their efficiencies and ability to react, especially on remote sites.”
