Safety Apparel Better Suited To Australia’s Climate

As we all know, personal protective equipment (PPE) is the last line of defence to protect workers from hazards. That’s why it’s crucial to choose the right PPE for the job and environment.

In Europe, PPE apparel is often made from man-made fabrics because they can hold fluorescent Hi-Vis properties. With Australia’s harsher climate however, man-made fabrics can be uncomfortable and hotter for workers to wear.

According to Safe Work Australia, the WHS standard on PPE requires businesses to ‘select suitable PPE for the worker and the task, that fits properly and is comfortable… and is compatible with other PPE worn’.

That’s why we tend to opt for Hi-Vis apparel that’s made of 100% cotton or natural fibres. While they might fade quicker over time, the benefits of worker comfort and therefore productivity far outweigh the cost of more frequent replacements. In fact, Australia is the only country in the world that has specifications for Hi-Vis cotton workwear.

Heat stress is also another reason and to get the ‘balance’ right. A worker’s susceptibility to heat stress in certain conditions, can lead to the body’s core temperature reaching 40.5°C, which in turn the possibility of organ failure, even death. The breathability of cotton can help mitigate this.

In Australia, we have to consider both safety and comfort, so we know our workers are adequately protected, but are also comfortable. Experience has shown that workers are more likely to use PPE properly if it doesn’t restrict their movement or cause them to overheat.

To support this, Blackwoods’ own brand Workhorse is about to introduce a new Stretch range of workwear made with 98% natural cotton and 2% elastane. Designed specifically with the Australian climate in mind, they feature underarm and upper back cooling vents, a sun collar extension, an ergonomic fit, and an elasticated waistband for ultimate comfort and movability.
