Compliance Is Key

There are several requirements to make sure your safety shower and eye/face wash equipment complies with the Australian Standard AS 4775:2007, Emergency Showers and Eyewash Equipment including the following:

• Safety showers must have a minimum flushing fluid flow rate of 75.5L/min for at least 15 minutes.
• Eye/Face wash stations must have a minimum flushing fluid flow rate of 11.4L/min for at least 15 minutes.
• Eyewash stations must have a minimum flushing fluid flow rate of 1.5L/min for at least 15 minutes;
• Emergency shower and eye/face wash units should be installed within 10 seconds or 15 metres from high-risk areas so they’re easily accessible for all personnel; and
• There must be an unobstructed path to the safety shower or eye/face wash unit that is free from any trip hazards, it must be on the same level as the hazard and be clearly identified with green emergency signage that is visible and lit so that staff can easily navigate their way in the event of an emergency. 

The Australian Standard also addresses required water temperature, valve control, nozzle design and performance, lighting, signposting, testing and maintenance requirements.

Most emergency shower and eye/face wash equipment require a source of reticulated water, however to cater for sites without plumbed water, there are gravity-fed or standalone units available. Portable, gravity fed units include a water reservoir that requires disinfecting with a water preservative and fluid replacement every 3 months to ensure the tank contents remain clean and suitable for use.
