Let’s face it – removing stubborn rust from tools and hardware often requires time, elbow grease, or the use of some very acidic or caustic chemicals, but de-rusting has to be done if you want to go on using equipment.
That’s where CRC’s Evapo-Rust comes in.
Evapo-Rust is a ready-to-use fluid that comes in 1-litre and 5-litre jerry cans, as well as 20-litre drums and an aerosol. It’s pH-neutral, water-based, non-flammable, non-toxic and biodegradable. This special formulation provides fast and effective restoration of rusted steel or ferrous-metal items simply through soaking. Evapo-Rust doesn’t have to be thrown out after every use – you can use it many times over.
“We are excited to share Evapo-Rust with our customers. It’s safe and easy to use, and has no pungent fumes – it won’t leave you feeling heady like some products!” says David Bailey, AU Field Sales & Contracts Manager at CRC Industries Australia.
With Evapo-Rust there is no need for blasting, grinding, scrubbing or sanding – the product does all the work.
The way it works sounds like magic, but it’s pure chemistry. It involves a process of selective chelation – where a chelating agent removes the iron from iron-oxide (that is, the rust) and holds it in solution. A sulphur-bearing compound then extracts the iron from the chelator, freeing it to remove more rust from more items. This process is what makes Evapo-Rust highly reusable.
The formula will not attack any base metals, nor is it powerful enough to remove iron from steel. As a non-corrosive product, Evapo-Rust will not harm adjoining materials such as plastic, PVC, non-ferrous metals or wood. Evapo-Rust can be used in a home workshop and in a wide variety of industries and applications – including in metal work, marine, heavy vehicles, general maintenance and even antique shops.
Using Evapo-Rust is easy. All you need is a container (preferably one with a lid to prevent evaporation) to pour the Evapo-Rust into. Your soaking container should be large enough for the items to be submerged (for very large items you can do the treatment in stages).
Simply place rusted-on items in the soaking bath and let the liquid perform its magic. The time you soak an item will depend on its degree of ‘rusted-on-ness’. If it’s severe, you may need to leave it for several hours or overnight. There is no need to worry about leaving it too long however, as Evapo-Rust won’t cause any harm.
You should check how your item is going from time-to-time, by removing and wiping it with a rag. If it’s still rusty, you just need to return it for a longer soak. After removing your pieces from the soaking bath, just rinse them and air-dry. The soaking liquid can then be poured back into the jerry can, ready for next time. The fluid can be reused until you notice it starting to lose its effectiveness.
When using Evapo-Rust Spray Gel, end-users need to spray their equipment and tools and leave the solution ‘on the tool’ to remove the rust.
Of course, rust has a way of returning – often within a few weeks! It’s just the way it is. So we recommend using a rust-prevention product, such as CRC’s Soft Seal, to prevent this from happening. CRC Soft Seal coats your item with a waxy film that helps seals out moisture and contaminants and provides up to two years of rust-resistance.
