Reducing the spill risk with collapsible bunding

Reducing the spill risk with collapsible bunding

Spills and leaks of fuel, oil and hazardous chemicals can have serious consequences for large-scale civil and infrastructure projects.

Environmental regulators take pollution incidents on construction sites seriously, particularly where spills enter stormwater systems or cause contamination to land and groundwater. Construction companies and contractors can face significant clean-up costs, unplanned downtime, project delays and fines or enforcement action from regulators for failing to adequately manage spill risks on site.

Beyond any environmental impact, spills can also create safety hazards for workers and damage a company’s reputation with clients, regulators and the wider community. Despite these risks, proper spill containment is often overlooked, especially when workers are moving from job to job on large sites and work zones are temporary.

Collapsible bunding from Spill Crew can help, delivering proactive spill containment that can be easily moved around busy sites.

Collapsible bunds to capture and contain leaks.

Spill Crew’s collapsible bunds are lightweight and portable, so they can be moved around for temporary storage of chemicals, fuel, oils and lubricants, degreasers and other liquids in drums or IBCs. They act as a physical barrier, capturing and containing leaks and spills at the source before they can spread, potentially endangering workers as well as the environment.

The Rigid-Lock bunds feature a patented wall support design with stainless steel braces that lock the wall at a full 90° position. The walls can be lowered or raised to allow forklifts and other vehicles to drive into the bund, either to move containers or to undergo maintenance like oil changes. They are simple and quick to set up, wherever workers are located on site.

These bunds come in a range of sizes, from 1.2 m x 1.2m right up to 15.2 m x 3.6m, plus custom sizes. They come in different materials and thicknesses to suit a range of applications.

These include 900gsm PVC for oil, fuel and non-aggressive chemicals, 1350gsm PVC for fuel, oil and industrial liquids and EGM1020 Elvaloy® Polyester Geomembrane for acids, bases, solvents and a broad range of chemicals.

Mile Halliday, Spill Crew Australia Marketing Manager says,

“They're compatible with a range of liquids, like oil, fuel, diesel, hydrocarbons, and more. But we also have a chemical grade material for harsher liquids, such as acids or chemicals. They can be folded up into a compact size and then set up within minutes compared to the more rigid bunds that are a lot bulkier.”

Made for local conditions.

Constructed using durable, heavy-duty materials, Spill Crew’s collapsible bunds are Australian-made to suit harsh local conditions.

“Australian-made is a big focus for us at Spill Crew, and we're very proud Australian manufacturers,” Mike says. “This resonates with our customers, we understand the local conditions and the value Australian manufacturing brings, and that’s important.”
