Minimising downtime with efficient spill management

Written by PROSAFE | 28 January 2026

In manufacturing, spills of chemicals, solvents, coolants, lubricants and other liquids are more than just messy, they can pose safety and operational risks.

Even small spills during production or maintenance can lead to slippery surfaces that cause accidents and injuries. Larger or repeated leaks can result in unplanned downtime, contamination, liquid going into drains and damage to equipment. Whether it’s drums of chemicals being knocked over, failed pipes or a leaking tap on a vat, an effective spill response is essential to avoid costly interruptions to operations.

Tailored spill solutions for specific applications.

PROSAFE offers a range of solutions designed to contain and clean up spills quickly, helping to minimise the risk to workers and downtime. Storing drums of chemicals and other substances on spill pallets can help ensure any unexpected spills are contained, ready for easier clean up.

PROSAFE’s spill pallets are made from durable polyethylene (PE). Each unit features a removable, heavy-duty PE grate with large drainage holes. A built-in drain valve allows for quick emptying and maintenance, while the dual forklift channels ensure the pallets can be moved safely and easily. They hold either two or four drums.

Keeping spill kits suited to the particular spill risk on hand enables a quick and effective response to liquid hazards. The range of spill kits includes:

  • General Purpose Kits: Suitable for managing both oil and water-based spills, these kits come in capacities from 20L to 240L.
  • Oil and fuel kits: Made for hydrocarbon-based liquids, these kits selectively absorb oil and fuel without taking in water, making them ideal for wet environments. They’re available as compact portable packs or larger wheelie bins up to 240L.
  • Chemical spill kits: Easily identified by their bright yellow colour, these kits are built for handling acids, alkalis and other corrosive chemicals. Each includes chemical-resistant PPE, and is available in sizes up to 240L.

All kits are equipped with high-quality components, that can be replaced piece by piece as they are used. This helps streamline procurement and ensures spill kits are always ready to go. Components include:

  • Absorbent pads: Pre-cut polypropylene sheets that soak up to 0.8L each -ideal for cleaning spills on flat surfaces.
  • Absorbent socks: Flexible tubular barriers that stop spills from spreading and are particularly effective around drains.
  • Absorbent pillows: High-capacity absorbents for pooling liquids or larger spills.
  • Absorbent rolls and booms: Designed for covering wider areas or containing spills on water.
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE): Includes chemical-resistant gloves, splash goggles and coveralls to keep responders safe.
  • Disposal bags: Clearly marked for contaminated materials to support safe and compliant waste handling.

PROSAFE can also create bespoke spill kits for specific applications and manufacturing needs. For example, a manufacturer might use more pads or pillows than booms. PROSAFE National Category Manager Shane Wood says Blackwoods technical specialists can provide manufacturers with on-site support to ensure they have the optimum spill solutions.

“Effective spill management results in reduced downtime, lower clean-up costs and compliance with environmental and safety standards. Protect your people, equipment, and productivity with PROSAFE’s end-to-end spill control solutions.”
