How Biomotion and Stretch Tech are Shining Bright for Safety and Comfort

No matter what time of the day, workers are susceptible to the dangers that arise during construction, roadworks, and related maintenance activities. Rain, overcast conditions, heat, humidity, and poor visibility are all factors that can ultimately lead to injury or death.

At night in particular, visibility is further reduced, and the right personal protective equipment is generally the last line of defense to protect workers from hazards. This is where technology such as Biomotion really shines. Biomotion refers to retro-reflective markers, usually tape, that is placed on clothing in a way that enables the movement of the person to be easily identified. Markers are usually placed in areas around the elbows, wrists, knee joints, and chest or waist.

CASE STUDY: Biomotion provides an additional level of visibility

A study conducted by the Optometry research team at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) concluded that retro-reflective markers positioned in ‘biomotion’ configurations on clothing can significantly enhance the night-time visibility of road-workers. This in-turn improves safety as workers are more visible by drivers in passing vehicles and site machinery operations.

“Positioning reflective markers in this way over standard vest configurations, amplifies visual movement significantly,” says Cahal Callanan, Blackwoods Own Brand, Workwear Product Development Manager. “In fact, by placing them at both the top and bottom of a workers’ uniform, the outline of the human body and the direction of the workers’ movement is clearer. This is particularly important on busy roads or fast laneways, where drivers are required to identify objects and make decisions quickly.”

The All-New Workhorse Biomotion/Stretch Ripstop Range

Workhorse's latest work wear range integrates biomotion tape as well as new ‘stretch’ ripstop technology specifically designed with the harsh Australian climate in mind. This stretch fabric ‘moves’ with the worker, and is not restricted to night-time use, but all environments where visibility is hampered such as indoor and underground worksites.

With such a focus on comfort and safety in the workplaces across Australia, the New Stretch range with Biomotion tape from Workhorse will only continue to gain popularity, while keeping workers more productive, cooler, comfortable, and safer than ever before.

The new Workhorse ‘Stretch’ range of work wear is made of 98% cotton and 2% elastane. It features underarm and upper back cooling vents, a sun collar extension, an ergonomic fit, and an elasticated waistband for ultimate comfort and movability.
