SAFETY CABINET

Does your worksite handle and store dangerous goods such as flammable liquids indoors? The safe storage of dangerous goods is essential for companies aiming to meet their Safework and environmental obligations. Correctly storing dangerous goods will significantly contribute to reducing the risk of spills, cross-contamination, or accidental employee exposure to hazardous material.

What are Class 3 flammable liquids and how can they be dangerous?

Commonly used Class 3 flammable liquids used in the workplace include adhesives, paints, oil, fuel, ethanol, methanol varnishes and lacquers. When exposed to fire, flammable liquids and their vapours can combust causing ignition of nearby dangerous goods, setting off further explosions. This is one of the main risks of flammable liquid storage in the workplace with the potential for fire or explosions to impact other dangerous or hazardous goods, with potentially serious consequences.

How to store Class 3 flammable liquids

There are a number of things to consider when selecting appropriate flammable liquids storage options:

  • Conduct a risk assessment specific to your site and ensure you have safety data sheets for your stored substances.
  • Store Flammable liquids in a designated area, away from other dangerous goods such as flammable gas, aerosol or explosives.
  • Keep flammable liquids away from any heat or ignition sources such as an open flame, cigarette lighter or any hot equipment.
  • Store Class 3 flammable liquids in a dedicated flammable liquids safety cabinet made to meet the requirements of Australian Standard AS1940-2017.
