How eye protection that dials up style can boost compliance

How eye protection that dials up style can boost compliance

Safety glasses that are dated, uncomfortable, fog or scratch easily usually end up anywhere but on the face! Workers pull them off mid-task, throwing them in the toolbox or the ute tray. They push them on top of their helmet, and forget about them entirely. Compliance takes a dive, leaving workers potentially vulnerable to injury.

So how can employers encourage workers to keep their safety glasses on?

The solution is simple - give them effective eye protection that they actually want to wear.

Balancing protection, style and comfort.

uvex safety has stepped in to help bridge the compliance gap, with its apex and aquarius glasses delivering a modern look, without compromising on safety and comfort. The glasses have certified medium impact protection under AS/NZS 1337.1 and have been designed around the guidelines for fit and comfort in AS/NZS 1336.

Both models feature a high-wrap 8-base curve polycarbonate lens for wide peripheral vision, and anti-fog and anti-scratch coatings enable workers to keep a clear eye on the task at hand.

The glasses closely follow the contours of the face, with minimal gap for optimum fit, and offer wraparound coverage. The frames are lightweight, for all-day wearability.

Best of all? Both models look great on, instead of in the toolbox!

The sleek and sporty apex can take workers from site to the mountain bike trail or down the pub for lunch. The apex has an adjustable nosepiece and mouldable side arms to provide personalised fit across different face shapes, helping ensure the glasses stay secure and comfortable all day long.

There are eight styles available, including a black frame with clear, blue mirror or grey polarised lenses, an olive green frame with a brown lens and a hi vis yellow frame with a purple mirror lens for workers who really want to stand out!

The aquarius features integrated side shields for protection against side impacts and rubberised edges on the arms and rubberised temple tips to avoid pinching. A flexible nose pad offers a comfortable fit, without pressure points that can discourage wear. Stylish and fashionable, they come in a range of frame and lens colour combinations, including a clear or graphite frame with blue or red lenses and a tortoiseshell frame with a grey lens. There’s also a polarised option.

Matthew Oastler, Product Manager – Eye & Hearing Protection at uvex safety, says safety glasses that aren’t worn protect no one.

“When we ask a site safety supervisor where the compliance breakdown is, the answer is rarely that they don't have enough eyewear or they don't have the right type of eyewear,” he says. “It’s simply that the worker has taken them off because they are uncomfortable, and don’t perform under the conditions. That's not just something I've personally noticed on site; it's a pattern the AS/NZS 1336 guidelines recognise. It's also exactly the gap the uvex apex and aquarius ranges aim to close.”
