Why footwear is crucial for reducing injury risks in mining
In the mining industry, good safety footwear is essential. Statistics from the NSW Resources Regulator indicate injuries to the feet, toes and ankles...
Static electricity isn’t just a minor nuisance in power generation operations, it can pose a threat to worker safety and can also cause costly equipment damage. Workers can be exposed to static electricity when entering pipelines, substations or plant rooms.
Static can be generated in a variety of ways, including by liquids moving through pipes at high speeds, faulty or inadequate grounding, equipment malfunctions, static-prone surfaces and the presence of flammable vapours. Over time, static electricity can build up in the body. A static build-up followed by discharge can have serious safety consequences, from electric shocks and damaged electronic equipment to ignition, sparks, fires and even explosions in extreme cases.
Employers can help minimise the build-up of static electricity and its potential effects by providing workers with appropriate PPE, such as anti-static safety boots.
Anti-static safety boots feature anti-static additives in the sole and purpose-built uppers. When a worker wears these types of boots, any build-up of static charge in their body flows through to the footwear and is dissipated into the ground in safe amounts. This helps prevent electric shocks and sudden discharges that may cause sparks, ignite gases or damage sensitive equipment.
The range of anti-static safety footwear from Blundstone is ideal for tough working environments where electrostatic build-up may be a factor. This includes in utility distribution, maintenance and infrastructure work, as well as solar, wind and hydro-electric environments.
Blundstone’s anti-static boots are designed to allow a 100K ohm maximum resistance when new. This provides a measure of protection against electrical shock, while allowing static discharge to transmit. These boots reduce the risk of ignition and support safe interaction with sensitive equipment, without compromising on comfort or durability.
Adrian Blandford, Global Range Manager (Work & Safety) at Blundstone, says it’s important to select boots like those from Blundstone that meet the anti-static requirements of safety standard AS 2210.3:2019, specifically additional clause 6.2.2.2. All Blundstone’s certified boots that meet this requirement have the symbol ‘A’ included on the label. An anti-static information sheet is included in the box.
“The footwear also needs to be kept clean and dry to be effective,” he says. “And ideally not used outside the workplace!”
Blundstone’s DuraFit and RotoFlex ranges feature selected styles with compliant anti-static properties.
Blundstone’s DuraFit series is engineered for comfort and reduced fatigue
The series is available in a range of sizes from UK/AU 4-14. The boots have an anti-bacterial, breathable and washable footbed, with a composite toe cap and toe guard, and heel and arch support. They offer slip-resistance to Australian Standards, heat resistance to 140C and are fuel and oil resistant.
The anti-static models include:
The RotoFlex range includes the anti-static #8071 – a 150mm zip black leather safety boot with lacing, in a wide range of sizes from UK 3-14. Some half sizes are available. The wide-fit boot offers a cut-resistant steel toe cap, fuel and oil resistance and heat resistance to 140C. It’s slip resistant in addition to being anti-static. Blundstone’s RotoFlex® biomechanical design has been created for maximum stability, balance and comfort.
