Hand tools designed to reduce the risk of electric shock

Written by JBS | 29 May 2026

When working in the utilities sector, there’s no margin for error when electricity is involved. Workers are frequently hands-on with machinery and equipment that can present a risk of electric shock, in power stations and water treatment facilities or during field work on telecommunications infrastructure.

In these environments, standard hand tools simply don’t provide the level of protection required for installation, maintenance and repair tasks. Workers need hand tools they can rely on to get the job done, while protecting against electric shock. This is where the JBS range of VDE-certified hand tools comes in.

VDE certification for ultimate peace of mind.

The JBS range of pliers and screwdrivers is made using non-conductive thermoplastic materials in the handle that are designed to insulate against electrical current and help protect from shock when working on live, high-voltage components. Each tool carries the internationally recognised VDE mark, issued by Verband der Elektrotechnik (VDE), the German Association for Electrical, Electronic & Information Technologies.

The VDE certification indicates that the tools have been independently tested to meet the requirements of IEC 60900, the global standard for insulated hand tools used in live working conditions. As part of this certification process, tools are subjected to rigorous testing, including dielectric testing at voltages significantly higher than their rated capacity, as well as checks for insulation integrity, flame resistance, impact strength and adherence.

Rated for use up to 1,000V AC, these tools are specifically designed for live working applications, providing electricians and technicians with confidence that their equipment meets stringent international safety benchmarks.

Steve Birbeck, Blackwoods Tools Product Manager says,

“When protecting workers against electric shock, the last line of defence is the tools they use."

Safety without compromising on quality

In addition to compliance with international safety standards, JBS tools offer a range of other benefits. The tools are designed with comfort in mind, featuring ergonomic construction, cushioned handles and improved grip to support extended use with greater ease, control and confidence on the job.

Yellow and red striped handles also make it easy to tell at a glance which tools in a kit are safe to use around electrical currents. The VDE certification sets these tools apart from competitors at the price point, providing excellent value for tools that also meet international safety standards. Cost savings also come through JBS being a Blackwoods owned brand. By working directly with manufacturers, Blackwoods eliminates unnecessary costs within the supply chain and passes those savings on to you.

“We underwent a rigorous selection process to find the right factory and the right feel for the tools,” Steve says.

JBS tools are available exclusively through Blackwoods, and can be purchased individually to top up a toolkit, or in sets. Pliers come in a range of lengths, from 160mm to 250mm. The screwdrivers are available in Phillips head or flat tip styles in sizes 3x100, 4x100, 5.5x125, 6.5x150, 1x80 and 2x100. They come in a range of lengths.
