Dust remains one of the most persistent challenges across construction projects.
When not compacted on road surfaces, the crushed or powdered material known as fines can become airborne. The impacts can include health risks due to varying levels of silica, reduced driver visibility, increased wear and tear on vehicles and heavy machinery, and increased downtime.
These issues have left the industry searching for effective ways to deal with dust. Surekleen Dusty offers a solution, while also supporting Indigenous procurement goals, local communities and local industry. Developed using lignosulfonates accessed from a Victorian paper mill’s byproduct, the natural pulp is dehydrated into powder form, shipped and rehydrated.
The concentrate is then pumped into a water cart to be sprayed on road surfaces. While water can wet down a surface, adding moisture to temporarily lay dust, Dusty is designed to bind the fine particles together, and stabilise the surface to prevent dust from becoming airborne.
Surekleen CEO Sam Smith says the bio-derived product is more than a dust suppressant.
“The natural polymer creates a bond between the fines and surface,” Sam says. “Artificial polymers can often separate as soon as you break the crust. Ours binds with the road for a more durable surface.”
The three-part process of wetting, particle binding and moisture retention can lead to improved visibility and longer-lasting road and surface integrity – particularly across busy haul roads, construction access routes and stockpile areas. Raw lignosulfonate is classified as non-hazardous. There’s minimal PPE required and a low toxicity risk when handled according to standard industrial practices.
The use of Dusty also supports Indigenous communities through Surekleen’s “Clean with Purpose” partnership with Blackwoods. The program allocates a portion of product sales to support Indigenous education initiatives in every state through not-for-profit partners, including:
