In the realm of battery manufacturing, Energizer has long been a torchbearer in innovative solutions to not only provide high-performance batteries but also champion sustainability.
Energizer’s journey of innovation began over a century ago, with the creation of the first dry-cell battery and the first consumer battery. But it’s their sustainability advancements that have set an impressive industry benchmark, most notably the creation of the world’s first zero-mercury alkaline battery.
In 1991 and the world’s first AA and AAA batteries made with 4% recycled content in 2016. Today, they have 22% recycled content in their rechargeable batteries and up to 10% recycled material in selected sizes across their Industrial,
Max Plus and Lithium ranges.
Energizer is part of B-Cycle, Australia’s first Battery Stewardship Scheme. Many brands and retailers partner with this scheme that supports product stewardship for the entire lifecycle of the product, from import to recovery at end of life. End users have many options to return used batteries and safely dispose of them, and allow them to have a second life through suitable recovery means.
“Energizer’s innovation with using recycled steel in the casing of batteries is really positive, and with design enhancements for more durable and longer lasting batteries – this helps businesses and end users save money and time,” says Sarnia Hobson, Head of Sustainability at Blackwoods. "When batteries are recycled via B-Cycle, we better consider our environment and carbon footprint when safely disposing of these products.”
The company actively participates in global initiatives to promote responsible battery use and recycling. By educating consumers and collaborating with recycling programs, they ensure that from design to disposal, every step is optimised to minimise environmental impact.
Energizer batteries are designed to last longer, which directly translates to less environmental waste. Fewer battery replacements mean fewer batteries produced and a reduced carbon footprint.
“A great example are hotel door card readers, each requiring four AA batteries. A simple conversion from Energizer Industrial to high performance batteries like the Energizer Max Plus range, can halve the number of batteries used,” says Steve Daw, National Account Manager, Energizer. “This longevity can also benefit a business financially. The high-performance, long-lasting nature of Energizer batteries means one can spend significantly less time swapping out batteries across various devices. The biggest users include mine sites, which can achieve up to 15,000 hours of annual changeover time savings.”
