Manufacturers need to be confident that Lockout Tagout (LOTO) procedures are being followed on site, no exceptions. But compliance can be an issue, especially when LOTO equipment is stored in one centralised location. On large sites, this can be hundreds of metres away from where workers need to isolate plant and machinery.
Complacency creeps in. Workers are reluctant to make the long walk to get equipment. When they do get there, someone else has pocketed the lockout device or safety padlock they need, rather than making the trip to return it. The distance is inconvenient and inefficient, taking workers away from the job and slowing down operations.
The solution? Smaller LOTO stations from Master Lock that can be located right next to plant and machinery.
Moving from a large, centralised location to smaller stations can help maintain efficient workflows, encourage compliance and enhance worker safety. The benefits can include:
Manufacturers can get smaller Master Lock LOTO stations that are tailored to the needs of specific plant and machinery through Mayo Hardware’s SafeSite program. In a free site survey, Mayo can assess current LOTO procedures and equipment, identify any gaps and inefficiencies and suggest solutions in a final report with images. Decentralised stations can be small, just a couple of locks and hasps, or include 20 locks and a range of devices, depending on the particular equipment required.
Paul McGregor, Senior National Key Account Manager - Safety/Industrial at Mayo Hardware, says manufacturers need to think about two key questions when considering decentralised LOTO stations.
Are you comfortable your staff are visiting the centralised location for every lockout procedure, no matter how small?
Are you losing equipment consistently out of the centralised location?
If the answer is yes, smaller, decentralised LOTO locations might be able to help.
“Procedures, products and training are but parts of the puzzle. Having LOTO products quickly and easily accessible improves safety and compliance no end.”
