Yet the risks and the need for protection from soldering fumes can often be overlooked. According to Safe Work Australia, soldering can present a range of health and safety risks that need to be managed in the workplace. The composition varies, but soldering fumes may contain lead and other chemicals. During manual soldering, a worker’s breathing zone is often close to the workpiece, which may increase the potential for inhaling soldering fumes. The potential health effects can range from irritation through to more serious issues, depending on the substances present and the level and duration of exposure. Companies may rely on fans or open windows to help disperse fumes, yet general ventilation is not always enough. Safe Work Australia says safety data sheets for the solder, fluxes and other materials being used should be consulted to identify specific hazards and appropriate control measures, including local exhaust ventilation that captures fumes at the source. ### **Managing the risk of soldering fumes.** One solution for this is the Weller Zero Smog Shield Pro.
