Clear communication on site, without compromising hearing

Written by 3M | 23 July 2026

Clear communication is vital on busy worksites, but noise from vehicles, machinery and even poor weather can make it challenging.

Machinery operators and construction workers may find it hard to hear over site noise. Farmers and trade business owners can find themselves missing important work calls, or needing to down tools to take them. It can be tempting to remove hearing protection altogether if calls or radio communications are difficult to understand.

When these things happen throughout a busy shift, it can impact safety, slow work down and dial up frustration!

The 3M™ PELTOR™ WS™ ALERT™ X+ headset can help, supporting hearing protection and clear communication at the same time, without interrupting the workflow.

Staying protected and connected.

The new PELTOR™ WS™ ALERT™ X+ complies AS/NZS 1270:2002 and meets specifications for hearing protector Class 5 (28 dB) (SLC80). Bluetooth® 5.2 MultiPoint technology connects the WS ALERT X+ with one or two external devices, such as mobile phones or compatible two-way radios.

Qualcomm® aptX™ HD Adaptive Audio delivers robust, high-resolution sound for calls or music and podcast streaming through a phone. A noise-cancelling boom microphone supports clear speech transmission, even when speaking at normal volume in loud environments. Level-dependent ambient listening helps reduce background noise, so it’s easy to continue working while conducting business from the headset, even when it’s noisy.

Features such as large buttons, voice-guided menus and voice confirmation allow users to adjust settings, hear low battery alerts or switch quickly between functions such as Push-To-Talk and Push-To-Listen. With a double tap, users can hear clearly what’s happening in the environment around them, facilitating communication, without compromising situational awareness.

A quality investment in safety and convenience.

The headset is available as a headband, or helmet attachment. Weighing in at between 366-385g, it’s comfortable to wear for extended periods.

It features:

  • Entertainment audio limiting: where streaming media or music is allowed on the job, WS ALERT X+ limits entertainment audio to 82 dB(A) effective to the ear. Phone calls take precedence over streaming.
  • Built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery with USB-C charging jack: enables run time of up to 68 hours, depending on use and avoids the need for frequent battery replacement. Auto power off engages after four hours of non-use to save battery life.
  • Over The Air (OTA) firmware updates: these keep the headset up-to-date to resolve glitches quickly, maintain performance and prolong the headset lifespan without the need to upgrade to a new model.
  • 3M™ Connected Equipment App: allows users to control the headset through a mobile phone or tablet. The easy-to-use interface makes it simple to set up, adjust and customise settings, view battery power levels and install firmware updates.
  • Serviceability: replaceable hygiene kits, microphones, battery adapters and charging cables help support maintenance and long-term serviceability.

Julie Toseski, Occupational Hygienist and Application Engineer Specialist at 3M Personal Safety Division, says the WS ALERT X+ can significantly improve connectivity.

“You don’t have to stop what you’re doing and move out of a noisy area or get off an excavator to take a phone call; it’s just a tap of a button. You can stay connected to customers, family, whoever and continue doing your job safely.”
