In mines, construction sites, warehouses, transport and logistics depots, and manufacturing facilities, a wrong turn or information oversight can result in serious injury or even death. Whenever you’ve worked on or visited an industrial site, signs of all different shapes, sizes and colours call out specific safety messages. With only a quick glance generally given to these signs, it’s critical that any messaging is clear, simple and consistent. And they must also cater for all cultural backgrounds. The right sign for the right site is therefore essential in maintaining a safe workplace environment. And it’s not just buying off-the-shelf, but customised signage that’s specific to different site requirements. But understanding which sign is right for you can present a real challenge. Several standards exist that govern the design and correct use of safety signs, which warn of potential safety hazards, provide emergency information, and advise what behaviour is expected within that work environment. The effectiveness of your signage also comes down to its positioning on site. Safety signs should be positioned in visible spaces and as close as possible to the hazard in question. Positioning signs at eye level and avoiding placing them on movable objects, like windows or sliding doors, will also help bolster safety. This further highlights the need for customised signage solutions.
