Why Let Leaking Pipes Cost a Fortune in Downtime?
Pipes do a sterling job in heavy-duty industries across Australia. Until they leak, split, crack or burst under the pressure of daily demands! The process line grinds to a halt on remote mine sites, as abrasive coal and iron ore batter a hole in the pipes.
Farmers are forced to dig up and replace broken irrigation pipes, a big waste of time and money. Production stops for soft drink manufacturers, deli meat processors, wineries and breweries when essential pipes spring a leak. A construction worker ruptures a water main on site, usually when there’s a very tight deadline to meet! Copper pipes leak into the car park of an apartment complex, with property managers scrambling to find a fix.
And that’s just on land. How do ships cope on the open seas, when a pipe bursts and it’s not possible to replace it?
It takes just one leaking or damaged pipe to shut down entire operations, potentially costing thousands of dollars in unscheduled downtime.
First aid for leaking pipes
Rapp-it Pipe Repair Bandages are an effective solution for temporary emergency pipe repairs. Restore a pipe in as little as thirty minutes and get essential operations moving again. It’s easy, and anyone can do it. Just clean and roughen the pipe; prepare the (included) Rapp-it Steel Putty and apply to the hole or crack; then wrap the Rapp-it Pipe Repair Bandage over the top. It takes just half an hour to cure, leaving a rock-hard finish. Keep a packet of Rapp-it on the shelf to deal with emergencies as they happen, so you can finish moving minerals, irrigating crops or completing marine operations before the ship gets back to port.

Rapp-it in the real world
A large mining customer in Western Australia sent feedback about their user experience to Marine & Industrial Marketing. When a crisis struck, it took just thirty minutes for a maintenance staff member to contain a leak and get a pipe operational again.
Here’s how the story unfolded.
Problem
A leak developed in a tailings underflow pipe, used to transfer smaller rejects from the tailings dam in a Coal Handling Processing Plant (CHPP). The pinhole leak was located on a bend close to the pump, where the basalt lining and metal casing had worn through. The 300mm pipe typically had around 600kPa pressure running through it 24/7, with pressure occasionally peaking at 1000kPa.
Solution
Isolating the pipe, then cleaning and roughening the damaged area. Applying Rapp-it Steel Putty to the hole (included with every Rapp-it Bandage). Immediately applying four Rapp-it Pipe Repair Bandages over the hole, as per instructions.
The result
“As always, I’m very happy with the result of Rapp-it. I have used it on numerous repairs around the plant. Always a quick and reliable fix to minimise downtime,” the maintenance staff member said.
According to Michelle Hutchings, General Manager, Marine and Industrial Marketing, Rapp-it has proven itself for multiple customers, in multiple ways. “It offers organisations of every kind a quick, easy and reliable way to fix pipe leaks, minimise delays and get production rolling again,” she said. “It’s an outstanding temporary repair for emergency situations, and can save companies thousands of dollars in unnecessary downtime.”
